A colleague of mine told me he had successfully installed Adobe Acrobat in Notes 8 (not sure if it was 8.5) as a clean install.
You may also consider a Notes-specific tool such as our PDF Converter. It doesn't require any DLL files (or a printer driver) to be installed. Users get a PDF toolbar icon. It is delivered through an email, and no client installation is required. As an administrator, you can centrally manage conversion settings through configuration documents. Or, you can use the LotusScript API if needed.
IMHO, a Lotus-specific solution can provide a number of advantages over general-purpose converters. For instance, server-based conversion, smart resizing of tables and images, conversion of embedded views and other design elements, to name a few.
